What َ means
It tells you to pronounce a short “a.” In بَ, ب supplies “b” and fatha supplies “a”: ba. Adding pronunciation marks to Arabic is called tashkeel.
Teaching materials, Qur'anic texts, and poetry use more vowel guidance than news or everyday messages. Experienced readers infer unwritten vowels from context; learners benefit from seeing them.
How did the stroke develop?
Earlier systems used red dots to indicate vowels. These were standard in Qur'an manuscripts from the early eighth until the late tenth or eleventh century. Stroke-shaped vowel signs appear in manuscripts outside the Qur'an by the mid-ninth century at the latest.
Both systems helped readers pronounce words whose letters left short vowels unspecified. Medieval accounts credit the scholars Abū al-Aswad with red dots and al-Khalīl with letter-shaped signs, but the manuscripts show variation rather than one clean switch.
How do I type fatha?
Enter the consonant first, then fatha. It attaches to the preceding letter even though it appears above it. Entered alone, it may appear with a dotted circle showing the missing base letter.

3Questions people ask
2Why does fatha move when I add shadda?
The display software arranges the marks together. Fatha and shadda remain separate characters with separate jobs; their placement can depend on the font and rendering software.
Is zabar the same as fatha?
It can be. Persian uses the names zebar or zabar for this written mark. Its pronunciation follows Persian conventions, so do not automatically apply Arabic reading rules.
