Where does the Mandaic script come from?
It developed within an Aramaic-related writing tradition. Its exact derivation is debated; scholars connect Mandaic writing with Aramaic-descended and Parthian-related traditions.
The alphabet is associated with Elymaean inscriptions and coins from the 2nd–3rd centuries CE. Its letter order follows Hebrew and other Aramaic traditions, including Syriac.
Scholars place the script's development in the 2nd century or earlier. Mandaean manuscripts preserve prayers, hymns, and ritual instructions; lead tablets and incantation bowls preserve magical texts. The oldest dateable Mandaean magical texts are from the 3rd–4th centuries CE.
