mandaic letter halqa

Mandaic letter Halqa

1/29

Halqa is a Mandaic letter for the vowel sound “a,” like the “a” in “father”; it writes short or long a. The Mandaic script writes Eastern Aramaic, including Mandaean religious texts. Its early evidence includes magical inscriptions, and Halqa can change shape when joined in a word.

Text symbol

What ࡀ means

It is the Mandaic letter for the vowel sound “a.”

Halqa writes both short and long a within Mandaic words. If someone sends ࡀ alone, treat it as a letter sample or fragment; the surrounding message is needed to understand why.

How did the Mandaic script begin?

Its origin is debated, and the script developed over time.

Surviving Mandaean magical texts include short spells on bowls and lead tablets from the 3rd or 4th centuries CE. One study places the script’s formation in the 2nd century CE, during the late Parthian period; Unicode describes a broader 2nd–7th centuries CE window for its development.

Possible ancestry includes flowing, cursive Aramaic writing or the official chancery script used under Parthian rule. Mandaic is also compared with writing from ancient Elymais and Characene and with Syriac, another Aramaic tradition; these are historical links, not interchangeable alphabets.

Mandaic was used to write Eastern Aramaic, including Mandaean liturgy and religious texts. Alphabet sequences could open magical manuscripts because Mandaean writing was treated as sacred. Later, Classical Mandaic appears in religious texts, while Neo-Mandaic is a spoken descendant.

Is Halqa an emoji?

No; ࡀ is a Mandaic letter, not an emoji.

Mandaic is written from right to left, and some of its letters join. Halqa joins to a letter on its right, so its shape can change with its position. If it appears as a square, the app or font may lack Mandaic support.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ࡀ show as a square?

Missing font support. The character is encoded, but the app still needs a font that includes Mandaic.

Is Mandaic the same as Syriac?

No. They are related Aramaic traditions with distinct scripts and letters; their historical connection does not make the alphabets interchangeable.
