What ࠾ means
Annaau marks a longer pause between narrated actions. It separates sentences whose actions are farther apart in time, a stronger break than Afsaaq, the interruption mark.
Afsaaq and Nequdaa began as sentence separators, then marked smaller breaks. Qitsa instead ends a section, like the open and closed divisions in the Masoretic tradition of Hebrew scripture. Afsaaq and Nequdaa are compared with Hebrew sof pasuq, a sentence-ending mark.
Reference charts and manuscript-based fonts can show Annaau with different outlines: charts normalize one style, while fonts based on manuscripts may preserve others. The outline alone does not identify its function.

1Why does ࠾ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
