What ﹺ means
In Arabic, kasra marks a short i vowel on the consonant. The spacing glyph ﹺ stays detached from the word. Iranian Persian also uses the inherited mark for a short e, including the optional ezāfa linker.
Arabic writing usually leaves short vowels unwritten. Vowel marks make pronunciation clearer and help distinguish readings. Early Qur'an manuscripts and other Arabic documents of the period used them sparingly, as reading guidance rather than decoration.
Arabic vowel marking developed gradually. In first/seventh-century Hijazi manuscripts (the first century of the Islamic calendar, in the seventh century CE), vowel marks appear only sporadically. Red-dot vowel notation became standard in Qur'an manuscripts from the early eighth through late tenth or eleventh century; later systems moved toward today's marks. Scholars also connect Arabic vocalization with dots used in Syriac writing, while describing gradual development rather than a single invention.
Should I use this form in Arabic text?
Use the combining kasra for ordinary Arabic; this form belongs in legacy text.
Unicode treats this as a compatibility form and maps it to a space followed by the ordinary combining kasra. It preserves older spacing behavior, not Arabic's usual letter-plus-mark structure.
After a consonant, the combining mark attaches to that letter. With no valid base, a shaping system may show a dotted circle or a missing-glyph box.
Why does kasra move above shadda?
Fonts may put kasra above the line when shadda is present. On its own, kasra sits below the base.
Unicode Arabic guidance says many fonts place kasra above the text with shadda, following metal-typesetting practice. Shaping engines may reorder Arabic marks; the vowel value stays the same.
Technical and script-focused; alone, it reads as encoding material rather than a conversational signal.
Do not use it in ordinary Arabic words; use the combining form after a letter.

2Questions people ask
2Is ﹺ the normal Arabic kasra?
No. It is a compatibility spacing form; ordinary Arabic uses the combining kasra on a base letter.
Why does a standalone kasra get a dotted circle?
It is a rendering fallback. A combining mark without a valid base may appear over a dotted circle or as a missing-glyph box, depending on the shaping system.
