Arabic letter beh with inverted small v below

6/48

ݕ is an Arabic-script letter used in Ajami, the use of Arabic script to write African languages. Seereer tables pair it with Latin ƥ for a p-like implosive consonant; other Ajami conventions can assign it differently. Sent alone, it is best read as a letter sample or a question about spelling.

Text symbol

What ݕ means

It represents a consonant in African-language Ajami. Seereer (Serer) spelling tables pair ݕ with Latin ƥ, a letter for a p-like sound made with inward airflow. Its shape adapts the Arabic letter beh ب and adds a mark to distinguish a sound not used in standard Arabic.

A 2003 Unicode proposal describes extended Arabic letters used in African-language publications and teaching. It cites Chtatou’s 1992 survey of Arabic-script spelling conventions shaped in late 1980s workshops. Those records document writing traditions, not the birth date of this particular shape. The proposal also describes literacy work in which Qur’anic-school training, local-language explanation and poetry supported writing and record-keeping.

What if someone sends ݕ by itself?

Read it as a letter sample first. A message containing only ݕ may point to an Ajami alphabet, a language lesson or the character itself. The intended language matters before you assign it a sound.

A 2010 Unicode proposal places ݕ in a Seereer profile alongside Latin ƥ. A 2014 Ajami guide lists it with ƥ in supplementary Pulaar material. The examples show that its reading depends on the language’s spelling convention.

How do I type ݕ?

Use a Unicode entry method for the exact letter. On Linux, press CtrlShiftU, enter 0755, then press Enter. In HTML use ݕ; in JavaScript or JSON use \u0755.

ݕ is one encoded character, not ordinary ب plus a separately typed mark. Arabic shaping can give it different forms beside other letters. A font without the needed glyph may show a fallback or a broken connection; that changes its appearance, not the underlying character.

This is a specialized African-language orthographic letter. A 2025 Unicode identifier review lists it as proposed uncommon use, not documented common use.

A lone ݕ is best treated as a letter sample, not a reaction.

Questions people ask

2

Does ݕ always mean p?

No. Its value follows the language’s Ajami convention. Seereer tables pair it with ƥ, and a Pulaar guide also lists it in supplementary material.

Why does ݕ change shape?

Arabic letters can take different forms depending on neighboring letters. A font without the needed forms may show an isolated or fallback glyph.
