arabic letter dal final form

Arabic Letter Dal Final Form

58/140

ﺪ is Arabic dāl (د) in its final shape, not a separate letter with its own meaning. Dal can join to the letter before it, on its right in Arabic writing, but cannot join to the next letter. In ordinary Arabic text, type د and let the text shaper choose the form; ﺪ is a fixed compatibility character.

What ﺪ means

No. It is dal in its final shape.

ﺪ is the shaped ending of the Arabic letter د, called dāl. Arabic runs from right to left: dal can join to the preceding letter on its right, but it does not join to the next letter on its left. It therefore has isolated and final shapes, not initial and medial ones. A font can change the outline, but not this joining behavior.

Arabic writing developed gradually from Nabataean Aramaic. The An-Namāra inscription, dated 328 CE, is an early Arabic text written in Nabataean script. The first dated inscriptions using a full Arabic letter set appear in the late fifth century, and fifth- and sixth-century texts vary in letter shapes, formulas, and spelling. Dal served as a consonant in words. In early Islamic writing, Arabic script appeared in Qur’anic manuscripts, administration, architecture, objects, and calligraphy.

How to type final Arabic dal

Type د and let the text shape it.

For ordinary Arabic text, enter the base letter د. The text shaper chooses its isolated or final form from the surrounding letters. FEAA is a compatibility presentation character: it fixes the final shape instead of adapting when its neighbors change.

If the letters do not connect as expected, check whether the letter on the right can join to dal. No font can make dal join forward.

Typographic: this character fixes a letter shape; its use does not add a special tone or word meaning.

Use د in ordinary text; fixed-form ﺪ can disrupt joining.

Questions people ask

2

Why does FEAA stay in one shape?

It is a fixed presentation character, so the text shaper does not choose a new form from its neighbors. Use د when the letter needs to adapt inside Arabic text.

Can I use FEAA in Arabic text?

Usually, use د instead. The fixed character can preserve legacy data, but ordinary Arabic text should let shaping handle the letter’s position.
