arabic letter jeem initial form

Arabic Letter Jeem Initial Form

47/140

ﺟ is a pre-shaped form of Arabic jeem, the same letter as ج. For ordinary Arabic writing, type ج and let the text choose the connected shape; ﺟ is for cases that specifically need this encoded form. In a word, it can interrupt the letters’ joining.

Text symbol

What ﺟ means

Type the base letter ج in ordinary Arabic text. The text system chooses its initial, middle, final, or standalone shape from its position. ﺟ hard-codes the initial shape, so it can suit a legacy-data check or a specimen that needs this exact form, but not normal spelling.

Because ﺟ is already shaped, it does not join like the base letter. Inserting it into a word can leave a visible gap beside neighboring letters; it does not change the word’s pronunciation.

Why is this separate form encoded?

For compatibility with older Arabic software. Some older encodings stored each joining shape as a separate character. Unicode retains these forms for interoperability, while ordinary Arabic text uses base letters and is shaped when displayed.

That computer-era form is much newer than the letter. Arabic writing developed from Nabataean Aramaic, and the earliest dated inscriptions with a full Arabic letter repertoire appear at Ḥimà in the late fifth century CE. Early Arabic inscriptions vary in letter shapes, spelling, and formulae; the letter served the writing of Arabic, not the later task of preserving a pre-shaped computer character.

Jeem sounds different across Arabic varieties

The shape does not tell you exactly how a speaker pronounces the letter. Jeem is commonly pronounced /g/ in Egyptian Arabic and /d͡ʒ/ in Saudi Arabic. The sound can carry regional and social cues, so one English approximation will not fit every speaker.

There is also a documented connection with Judaeo-Arabic, a tradition of writing Arabic with Hebrew characters: Hebrew gimel was used for Arabic jīm and ġayn, with diacritics distinguishing the sounds. That writing choice connects the traditions; it does not make ﺟ a Hebrew character.

A technical, typographic form; in ordinary Arabic prose, it marks a hard-coded letter shape.

Spell Arabic words with ج; ﺟ can break joining.
