What ڱ means
This Sindhi ng letter spells the nasal sound in “sing.”
In Devanagari Sindhi, ङ is its counterpart for that sound.
How did Sindhi come to use ڱ?
Sindhi adapted Arabic-based writing for its own sounds. Stack’s 1849 grammar records regional scripts; British standardization followed in 1853.
Arabic lacked this sound. Older Landa scripts—regional ways of writing Sindhi—were based on Brahmi, an ancient South Asian script family, and related to Sharada; they belonged to a separate tradition.
In connected Arabic writing, ڱ changes shape by position; unsupported fonts may show a box.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ڱ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
