Arabic Letter Tah Initial Form

83/140

ﻃ is the initial joining form of Arabic ṭāʾ (ط), the emphatic “t” letter. In ordinary Arabic text, type the base letter and let the text system choose its shape; this fixed form is mainly for legacy data or exact-form testing. The letter's history reaches back through Aramaic and Nabataean writing.

Text symbol

What ﻃ means

It writes Arabic ṭāʾ, the emphatic t sound. The initial form is a joining shape, not a different letter or an extra meaning. In Standard Arabic, ط contrasts with plain ت; dialects differ in how they pronounce the emphasis.

The letter's history belongs to a much older writing tradition. Its lineage includes an Aramaic form and Nabataean inscriptions from the first-century BCE through the fourth century CE. First-century CE papyri show cursive Nabataean, the script that developed into Arabic writing. These are dates in the letter's history, not dates for this computer-era form.

The same letter can have different spoken values across languages. Persian uses it in many Arabic-derived spellings but pronounces it /t/. In Urdu, ط is also pronounced like ت and is mainly found in Arabic-derived words; in both languages, its spelling can preserve a distinction that is not heard in pronunciation.

Why is ﻃ separate from ط?

It records a joining position, not a new sound.

Older text systems stored initial, middle, final, and standalone letter shapes as separate characters. Unicode retained these presentation forms for compatibility with old text, while ordinary Arabic text stores the base letter and lets the text system select its shape from its neighbors.

That is why ﻃ is unreliable for forcing a shape inside a word: neighboring letters may require another form, and software may convert it to ط. Use the base letter for normal Arabic writing; reserve the fixed form for data or tests that specifically require it.

Technical and legacy: it identifies a fixed letter position rather than setting a message's tone.

For ordinary Arabic writing, use ط and let the text system shape it.

Questions people ask

2

Why did software replace ﻃ with ط?

That can happen because compatibility normalization or a text converter replaces the fixed positional form with the underlying Arabic letter while preserving its identity.

Can a font fail to show ﻃ?

Yes. A font may lack this legacy presentation-form glyph, even if it can display and shape ordinary Arabic text written with ط.

Why is ﻃ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
