arabic ligature beh with jeem initial form

Arabic Beh–Jeem Initial Ligature

317/631

ﲜ combines the Arabic letters ب and ج (beh and jeem) in one initial-position ligature; it is not a word by itself. Ordinary Arabic text uses the two letters and lets shaping software join them. This form mainly belongs in legacy data or font work; its Unicode date marks encoding, not the age of Arabic calligraphy.

Text symbol

What ﲜ means

It is the Arabic beh–jeem pair in initial form. Specifically, it encodes بج: beh followed by jeem. The ligature has no separate word meaning; read the two letters as part of the full word.

“Initial” names the joining position. At the beginning of a right-to-left word, the pair joins the next letter on its left. The surrounding letters and font determine the full outline.

Where did this ligature come from?

Arabic calligraphy includes decorative ligatures, forms that fuse written letters. Surviving decorative Arabic-script examples reach the 7th century; that dates the broader practice, not this exact beh–jeem form.

By the late 9th/early 10th century, rules associated with calligrapher Ibn Muqla treated ligatures as part of good layout: they joined letters, managed space, and helped balance lines.

Naskh, a style used for writing books, emerged at the end of the 10th century and later shaped type for continuous text. Calligraphic styles redraw joined forms, while the letters connected here remain beh and jeem.

How should you use it?

Use بج in ordinary Arabic text; reserve ﲜ for exact-form data.

Arabic text is normally stored as base letters. Shaping software chooses how those letters join from their neighbors, so presentation forms such as ﲜ are compatibility characters rather than the usual way to write a word.

Use ﲜ when a legacy file, specimen, or exact-glyph requirement calls for that stored character. Some fonts also form a beh–jeem ligature from بج as an optional feature; that similar appearance can be produced without storing ﲜ.

Technical: it signals an exact presentation-form record or typography work, not a separate word.

بج Two ordinary Arabic letters, beh then jeem. This is the compatibility sequence represented by ﲜ and the normal stored spelling.

Questions people ask

2

ﲜ or بج: which should I use?

Use بج for ordinary Arabic spelling. ﲜ stores a compatibility presentation form; keeping the two base letters lets shaping and text search handle them normally.

Why is ﲜ a box?

The font or text-rendering path may lack a glyph for this character. The letters بج can still render through the font's Arabic shaping support.
