Arabic-script math letterforms appear in manuscripts and printed handbooks for centuries. Al-Qalasadi, a 15th-century mathematician from al-Andalus (Iberia), used Arabic letters as shorthand for square roots, unknowns and powers; that history does not fix this letter’s value. A 2006 W3C comparison records regional differences: Maghreb (North Africa) formulas use beh; Mashreq (Middle East) formulas differ in some function and operation symbols. Each style has its own character because form can affect meaning; it does not join like ordinary Arabic.
