What 𞹙 means
It is the tailed mathematical form of the Arabic letter ḍād. Arabic algebra can use letters for variables and first letters of words for operations. Local conventions tell readers how to interpret this one.
In the Maghreb, western North Africa, algebraic symbols are traced to the late 12th century. A copy of a 14th-century algebra book, made in Istanbul in 1747 and found on Jerba island in Tunisia, shows such signs in its margins.
Arabic and Persian mathematical notation uses letter styles that can distinguish symbols within one formula. Tailed forms appear in handbooks, although the 1987 Amman convention left them out.
