Arabic Letter Dad Isolated Form

77/140

ﺽ is the isolated presentation form of Arabic ḍād (ض), not a separate letter or sound. It preserves a shape used in older text encodings; ordinary Arabic text should use ض and let the renderer choose the shape. The letter belongs to a much older script history, and its pronunciation has varied across periods and regions.

What ﺽ means

It is the isolated shape of Arabic ḍād, kept for compatibility.

This character preserves one positional shape of the Arabic letter ض. Arabic writing developed through Nabataean Aramaic forms. An inscription at En Ovdat, dated to the first or second century CE, contains Arabic poetry, though its linguistic relationship is debated; the Namarah inscription, dated 328 CE, is a later milestone in the development of Arabic script.

The isolated, final, initial, and medial shapes are ways the same letter appears according to its position. This presentation form preserves older text that stored such shapes directly; it does not add a spelling or pronunciation.

Should I type ﺽ or ض in Arabic?

Use ض in ordinary Arabic; reserve ﺽ for compatibility work.

Arabic text normally stores the base letter ض, and the text engine chooses its shape from the surrounding letters. FEBD fixes the isolated shape, so placing it inside a word can interrupt that joining pattern. A font may draw it differently, but the character still represents the isolated form.

The letter's sound has been described differently across time and place. In the eighth century, Sibawayh described ḍād as an emphatic sound made with lateral airflow. Modern dialects vary in how they pronounce it, while the written letter remains the same.

This form belongs in compatibility or glyph-preservation work; ordinary Arabic prose uses the base letter ض.

Inside a word, ﺽ can interrupt contextual shaping and reduce interoperability.

2

Can this form break Arabic text?

It can. An explicit isolated shape can interrupt contextual joining inside a word; use ض for ordinary Arabic text.

Why does Arabic ḍād sound different?

Its pronunciation varies across Arabic traditions and regions. Historical descriptions also differ, though the written letter remains ḍād.
