What ⌒ means
Copy it from the palette above. There is no dedicated arc-symbol key, so a character picker or copy-paste is the fast route. Search for “arc” in your system picker, then paste ⌒ where you need it.
In geometry, the arc symbol marks the curved part of a circle between named points. Writing ⌒AB means the arc from A to B, not the straight line joining them — the arc AB notation students meet in circle problems.
That use is long-standing mathematical shorthand. Arc notation appears in Hamilton’s 1846–1849 symbolic geometry, and as of 2026 no single inventor for this exact glyph is established in the reviewed sources.
Why does it look wrong in my document?
The font changed the drawing, not the character. One font draws ⌒ tall and thin, another draws it low and thick. Check you did not swap in a tilde or shallow-arc lookalike before retyping it.
If the curve sits oddly beside letters, try another font or paste it again from the palette above. In plain text it cannot stretch over letters the way textbook overarc notation does.
Technical and academic; it signals geometry or mathematical notation.
Do not use it as a smile, eyebrow, or decorative curve.

1Why does ⌒ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
