Balinese Panti

90/127

In Balinese writing, ᭚ is a punctuation mark for boundaries in a text. The sequence ᭚᭜᭚ closes a section; related panti signs distinguish smaller divisions from the final close.

Text symbol

What ᭚ means

It signals where one structural unit stops and the next begins.

The section-ending pattern is ᭚᭜᭚: panti surrounds windu. The shorter ᭿ panti bawak marks a finer division; the longer ᭽ panti lantang marks the text's final close.

The Balinese script is attested in inscriptions from the 8th century. Its lineage runs through Pallava writing from southern India and Kawi, an older Javanese script.

Panti and pamada have different manuscript registers in a 2019 Unicode proposal: panti for secular or lower-status works, pamada for religious or noble ones.

It is not a generic full stop.

Questions people ask

Why does ᭚ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
