What ꛕ means
Its syllable value is transcribed “nga.”
The earliest documented phase of the script began around 1896 under King Ibrahim Njoya. It was developed to write Bamum and serve the kingdom’s history, law, administration, and education. Early forms included signs for whole words or ideas; revisions through 1910 led to a syllabary, where signs represent spoken syllables.
A 2018 study suggests Vai influenced Bamum’s syllabic design and that Bamum later influenced Bagam. These are links between writing traditions, not claims that ꛕ itself was copied from a particular sign.
