What ꛏ means
ꛏ represents the Bamum syllable “ni.”
It contributes one syllable to a word; the surrounding Bamum signs supply the word’s meaning.
Why was the Bamum script created?
It gave the Bamum language a local writing system.
The earliest documented phase begins around 1896, when King Ibrahim Njoya and collaborators at his court developed signs for writing Bamum. The script passed through several stages: its early pictographic or word-like signs were reduced, and by 1910 the modern a-ka-u-ku syllabic phase had taken shape.
Bamum writing served correspondence, history, law, medicine, maps, religious texts, schools, and printing. Its development drew on earlier Bamum stages and on Arabic and European writing models. Colonial suppression interrupted its use; revival work has continued since 2007, treating it as both a language tool and Bamum heritage.
A script-specific character for Bamum writing and language study.
