Bamum Letter Njaem

19/88

ꚲ writes the Bamum syllable Njaem inside a word, rather than acting as a stand-alone chat reaction. Its reading is usually transcribed nʒem. Bamum writing developed from signs for words and actions into syllabic signs.

What ꚲ means

It writes a Bamum syllable, not a reaction.

In the modern Bamum syllabary, ꚲ represents the syllable conventionally transcribed nʒem. The ʒ marks the consonant in the middle of English “measure”; the character name spells the reading as Njaem. It contributes sound inside a Bamum word rather than expressing an idea by itself.

King Ibrahim Njoya and palace scribes developed the script. Its first phase is dated 1896–99, and an early manuscript of that version is dated 1897. The project let people write in Bamum and create records for history, administration, education, and law.

How did Bamum writing change?

It evolved from signs for words and actions into syllabic writing.

By 1910, the system had reached the A-ka-u-ku stage, a syllabary whose signs represented syllables. ꚲ belongs to this later kind of writing.

Bamum’s development is compared with that of Vai, another West African script, while Bamum remains distinct from the Arabic and Latin scripts also used in the region. The comparison is about how writing systems developed, not a claim that ꚲ is a Vai, Arabic, or Latin letter. As of 2026, teaching efforts also present Bamum writing as cultural heritage.

Why does ꚲ look wrong?

A blank box usually means the font lacks this glyph.

Different fonts draw ꚲ differently. Bamum runs from left to right, and its letters do not join. If the character appears as a blank box or replacement mark, the active font lacks Bamum coverage.

Do not confuse ꚲ with ꛲, the separate Bamum Njaemli sign. Njaemli can introduce a proper name or change a word’s meaning; ꚲ is the syllable letter.

Use ꚲ as a written Bamum syllable; on its own, it reads as script rather than a ready-made chat reaction.

If someone sends it alone, ask which Bamum word it came from.

Why does ꚲ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Bamum block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
