bamum letter phase-e muae

Bamum Letter Phase-E Muae

455/569

𖧆 is Muae, a Bamum letter from Phase E; it helps spell words but has no word meaning by itself. It belongs to historical Bamum, while modern writing uses the later Phase-G repertoire. Keep the Phase-E label when transcribing it: the separately encoded Phase-C Muae is a different letter.

What 𖧆 means

It is a letter label, not a word translation.

The Bamum encoding table lists muae as its phonetic entry and mue in the French transcription column. These spellings identify the letter; they do not translate a full word, whose meaning comes from the complete Bamum spelling.

Bamum writing began around 1896 under King Ibrahim Njoya and palace scribes. Its earliest system mixed picture-like signs with signs for ideas as memory aids; later revisions shifted toward syllabic writing for administration and education and to record Bamum history. Phase E developed around 1907–1908 as part of those revisions.

Is Phase E used in modern Bamum?

No; it belongs to an earlier stage of the script.

The Bamum Supplement sits outside modern Bamum orthography, and its historical characters are mainly encountered in specialist linguistic and historical work. Modern Bamum uses the later Phase-G repertoire; this letter belongs in transcriptions of older writing.

Historical and specialist; it fits archival transcription and work on earlier Bamum writing.

Do not replace it with a same-named letter from another phase; the phase identifies a different character.

Why does 𖧆 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Bamum Supplement block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
