What 𖥬 means

It is a letter from one historical stage of Bamum writing.

An early Bamum writing system is recorded in a manuscript dated 1897. King Njoya and royal advisers revised the system repeatedly: Phase E emerged around 1907–1908, before a later standardized form developed around 1910. “Paa” identifies this character in the Phase-E inventory; it is not an English translation.

Why was Bamum writing created?

It let Bamum speakers write their language and keep royal records.

King Njoya and royal advisers developed the script for practical and political work. Palace schools taught it; officials used it for histories, court records, maps, land sales, and records of births, deaths, and marriages. Phase E was also used for a Bible translation.

Across successive redesigns, some early signs looked like pictures or represented whole words; later forms increasingly represented syllables. The neighboring Bagam/Eghap script is a separate system used for Mengaka, while Bamum writing served Bamum. This is a historical connection between two scripts, not a match between individual letters.

Why does 𖥬 show as a box?

A box usually means the selected font lacks this character.

𖥬 is text, so its appearance depends on the font used by an app or site. A font without support for this part of Bamum writing may show an empty box, while the underlying character remains unchanged. Use a font with Bamum support to see its design.

Historical and specialist; it belongs in discussion or transcription of Bamum writing.

Do not read “Paa” as an English word.
