Text symbol

What 𖥵 means

It marks one Bamum syllable, conventionally transcribed Wuo. A syllabic value is a spoken unit inside a word, not a word definition. In historical Bamum text, the surrounding signs establish which word it belongs to. Shown alone, it is a character sample or archival reference.

The first Lerewa phase appears in surviving manuscripts around 1897. It used many signs for things and actions; revisions shifted Bamum writing toward syllabic spelling. The 1910 A-ka-u-ku overhaul led to the modern script family. Phase-E Wuo belongs to the older repertoire.

What was Bamum writing used for?

It served the royal court and public life. King Njoya's origin story links the script to a revelatory dream; written Bamum was used for history, law, correspondence, maps, schooling, court administration and local knowledge.

A royal archive catalogue lists a c. 1912 volume of the History of the Bamum Kings in Akauku Mfemfe, the form produced by the overhaul. Bamum developed amid Arabic and Latin writing; its shift toward syllabic signs is compared with the Vai script's development.

Unicode 17.0 classifies these Supplement forms as historical, outside modern Bamum orthography and chiefly of interest for specialist language and history work. This character belongs to reading or documenting older Bamum, not ordinary current spelling.

Historical and specialist: it belongs to an older Bamum spelling tradition.
