bengali letter yya

Bengali Letter Yya

67/96

য় is the Bangla y-glide letter, distinct from য, which commonly has a j-like sound at a word’s start. This Bengali y appears inside or at the end of a word; ya-phala is a separate consonant-cluster spelling. The script developed through older eastern Indian writing traditions, and the dotted distinction was formalized during the 19th century.

What য় means

য় marks the y-glide; য is commonly j-like at a word’s start. The y-glide is the brief y sound that leads into the next vowel. A nukta is a dot mark, so “ya-nukta” describes this dotted form.

Ya-phala (্য) is different: it is য joined after another consonant with a virama, the mark that suppresses that consonant’s inherent vowel. It forms part of a consonant cluster, not a standalone য়.

Why was the dot added?

The dot marks the y-glide separately from bare য. Bangla script developed through older eastern Indian writing traditions: Brahmi, Gupta, Kutila, and Proto-Bangla. Proto-Bangla appears in inscriptions from the 9th–10th centuries, and complete Bangla forms appear in records from the 11th–12th centuries. Sanskrit’s ya had a y-like sound, while Bangla য commonly became j-like at the start of words. During the 19th century, spelling reform associated with Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar used য় to mark the glide.

Unicode’s Bengali-script label covers Bangla, Assamese, and other languages, whose letter inventories and spellings can differ. The spelling guidance here concerns Bangla.

When should I type য় instead of য?

Use য় for the y sound inside or at a word’s end. At a word’s start, standard Bangla spelling uses other conventions.

With the Avro phonetic keyboard, lowercase y follows context and can form ya-phala after a consonant; capital Y forces standalone য়.

A deliberate spelling distinction in Bangla writing.

Do not swap য় for য when writing Bangla; they mark different sounds.
