Text symbol

What ㆯ means

It is the nasalized ㄠ ending in Taiwanese phonetic notation.

Bopomofo is a sound-based writing system. Its Taiwanese extension covers sounds in Taiwanese Hokkien (Minnan) and Hakka that the Mandarin set lacks. In that extension, ㆯ is the nasalized counterpart of ㄠ, the plain au ending: say a vowel that glides from “ah” toward “oo” with some air passing through your nose. It is a syllable ending and can follow an initial, as in ㄧㆯ.

The wider Taiwanese Phonetic Symbols system is traced to Chu Chao-hsiang’s design in 1946. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education published a system for writing Taiwanese dialect sounds in 1998, when Unicode accepted the Bopomofo extension proposal. That decision marks the character’s entry into computer interchange, not the origin of the sound or notation.

What does ㆯ mean in a message?

It marks pronunciation; alone, it leaves the message unclear.

A reader familiar only with standard Mandarin Bopomofo may not recognize the extended set, while someone who reads Taiwanese phonetic notation may. From 2006, Taiwan promoted Tâi-lô, a Latin-letter romanization for Taiwanese Hokkien, in education; the same nasalized ending may therefore appear as auⁿ instead of ㆯ.

Why does ㆯ show as a box?

Your font may not contain a glyph for this character.

As of 2026, font coverage tables show that some fonts cover all of Bopomofo Extended and others cover only part. The missing mark is a display issue; it does not change the encoded character or its sound.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ㆯ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Bopomofo Extended block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
