What ㆤ means
In Taiwanese Hokkien, it marks a close e vowel.
Chu Chao-hsiang designed a Taiwanese Bopomofo extension in 1946. The wider set of additions for Minnan (southern Min, including Taiwanese Hokkien) and Hakka is dated to 1948; it let the phonetic system represent sounds beyond Mandarin. Taiwan’s Ministry of Education included the system in 1998.
