bopomofo letter j

Bopomofo letter J

12/43

ㄐ marks the opening sound of Mandarin syllables written with j in Pinyin; by itself, it is not a word. Its older source form is the Chinese character 丩. Zhuyin is used for teaching and typing in Taiwan, while Pinyin took on much of the same public role in mainland China, so a lone ㄐ in a message may be shorthand or an unfinished spelling.

Text symbol

What ㄐ means

It marks the j sound at the start of a Zhuyin syllable.

ㄐ is only the beginning of a Mandarin syllable, not a complete word. It combines with other Zhuyin letters and a tone mark: ㄐㄧ can be jī, jí, jǐ, or jì, depending on tone and the character. Stroke shapes may differ by font, but the character remains the same.

The form comes from the old Chinese character 丩, used in 糾 and recorded in Shuowen Jiezi, a Chinese character dictionary compiled around 100 CE. The Zhuyin system was created in 1913 and officially released in 1918 to show pronunciation and support teaching, dictionaries, and literacy. Taiwan still uses it in education and input; after Pinyin was introduced in mainland China in 1958, it took on much of Zhuyin’s public role there.

Why would someone send ㄐ by itself?

It may be an unfinished spelling or informal Zhuyin shorthand.

A lone ㄐ gives only the first sound, so it cannot identify the intended syllable or Chinese character on its own. A 2007 study of Taiwanese online Mandarin recorded Zhuyin used as sentence particles and for writing sounds directly; that informal style is not suited to formal text.

A shorthand string may be clear to people who know the convention and opaque to others. In a 2023 Taiwan court case, a five-symbol abbreviation containing ㄐ was interpreted as an obscene public insult. Read the whole string and its context before deciding what the sender means.

How do I type ㄐ?

Use a Zhuyin keyboard, then complete the syllable.

On the standard Taiwan layout, ㄐ is entered with the R key. Add the rest of the syllable and its tone; the input method then offers matching Chinese characters. Other keyboard layouts can assign different keys.

Used for pronunciation and input; shorthand can be informal and hard for outsiders to read.

A cryptic Zhuyin string can still carry an insult.
