What ╔ means
It starts a double-line frame, running right and down.
The repertoire comes from older terminal and vendor character sets used before Unicode. Fixed-width character-cell displays gave each character one slot, so matching strokes could meet across cells to draw a box. The Unicode 16.0 specification treats these as compatibility characters, retaining them for older character-cell graphics systems—fixed-width grids where each character occupies one cell. A 2023 Unicode terminal-support proposal described box drawing as part of rich command-line and text-interface displays.
Why does ╔ look broken?
Matching strokes must meet at the same cell edges.
╔ occupies one cell in a larger drawing. Continue it with matching double horizontal and vertical pieces, keep each row the same character width, and use a monospaced font. If the font or terminal lacks the glyph or draws its strokes at different positions, joins can show gaps or look detached.

4Questions people ask
1Why does ╔ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
