Brahmi Number Six

84/115

𑁗 is the older Brahmi number six, used in a numeral system that combined unit signs with separate signs for larger values. Today it belongs mainly in historical inscriptions and script study; the later positional digit for six is a different character from this one and from modern 6.

Text symbol

What 𑁗 means

It means six in the older Brahmi numeral system.

The earliest surviving evidence for this value appears in Ashokan inscriptions from the middle of the third century BCE. A Minor Rock Edict, a public order by the Indian ruler Ashoka, uses it in 256, his stated number of travel days.

Brahmi notation was not place-value notation: signs for units such as six sat alongside separate signs for tens, hundreds, and thousands. The surrounding numeral sequence supplies the full reading.

It recorded counts, gifts, and relief

It appears in public, administrative, and religious records.

Brahmi numerals served records and calculations. Ashokan inscriptions set out royal proclamations; the Mahasthan inscription describes famine relief in coins and paddy; and the Naneghat cave inscriptions list gifts connected with sacrifices.

Brahmi numeral forms changed through time. They developed into Gupta forms in the fourth to sixth centuries CE, followed by Nagari forms around the seventh century CE. Later Indian decimal traditions are part of the history behind modern 6; the shape of 𑁗 was not carried over unchanged.

Why does 𑁗 look blank?

A missing box means the font cannot display 𑁗.

𑁗 is text rendered by your font, not platform emoji artwork. A font without Brahmi coverage may show an empty box or substitute character; that affects how it looks, not which character it is. A Brahmi-capable font can display its glyph.

Neutral and specialist: it signals historical inscription reading, numerals, or Brahmi script study.

Use 𑁗 for historical Brahmi notation; use ordinary 6 for modern quantities.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑁗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
