What ६ means
It represents six in Devanagari writing.
The Brahmi numeral set appears in inscriptions, on coins, and in cave settings. A donation charter from the end of the 6th century is evidence for place-value notation, where a digit’s position affects its value, though some historians question the charter’s date.
From about the 7th century, Gupta-era numeral forms developed into Nagari, a later Indian script form; Nagari numeral forms kept changing after the 11th century. Hindi, Marathi, and Nepali share Devanagari numerals, and the value stayed six as their forms changed.
Why do Hindi texts use ६ or 6?
They show six in different numeral systems.
Both can appear in Hindi publications: ६ belongs to Devanagari numerals, while 6 belongs to the familiar 0–9 set, called international numerals in Indian policy. The choice can follow the readership and publication purpose. In 1960, an Indian government order allowed Devanagari numerals alongside international numerals in Hindi publications and directed scientific, technical, and statistical publications to use international numerals uniformly.
Neutral in tone; choosing ६ places the number in Devanagari script or a publication style that uses those numerals.
