What ५ means
It is Devanagari’s digit for five, equal in value to 5.
Its oldest documented ancestor is a Brahmi sign for five, found on Indian inscriptions and coins around the middle of the 3rd century BCE. Brahmi, an earlier Indian script, lacked place value; later Indian decimal writing used it.
Why does ५ look different from 5?
Its value stays five; type design changes its shape.
Devanagari developed from Gupta around the 7th century CE. Indian numerals later reached Europe through Arabic-speaking regions; “Arabic numerals” names that route, not their origin.
A Typotheque survey published 21 Mar 2022 found different preferences among respondents: Marathi readers favored one form of five, while Hindi and Nepali readers favored another.

Questions people ask
1Why does ५ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
