What 𑋵 means
It is the numeral for five. When reading a Khudawadi number aloud, read this character as “five.”
Why did Khudawadi develop?
For merchant record-keeping. Khudawadi grew from Landa, a group of scripts used by Sindhi merchants for accounts and correspondence. The Landa tradition is historically related to Sharada, an older South Asian script.
George Stack’s 1849 grammar of Sindhi described several Landa varieties. A Khudawadi standard appeared in 1868 and widened its use to schools, printing, administration, and courts. Late in the nineteenth century, Perso-Arabic became official for Sindhi, and Khudawadi lost its official role.
