Combining Grantha Digit Five

80/86

𑍫 is a Grantha Sāmaveda pitch mark: it marks the mandra svara, the lower-pitch cue, above a syllable to be sung. It does not count five. On its own, this combining mark may appear blank because it has no syllable to attach to.

What 𑍫 means

No. It marks a sung pitch, not a count.

𑍫 is the Grantha pitch mark for mandra svara—the lower-pitch cue in the Sāmaveda, a Vedic text meant for singing. It sits over the syllable to be sung, so read it with that syllable.

Grantha uses the same ordinary numerals as Tamil: ௫ is the number five. 𑍫 marks pitch; ௫ counts.

How did 𑍫 enter Grantha chant notation?

It belongs to Grantha's Vedic singing notation.

Forms ancestral to Grantha are attested in early Pallava inscriptions from the fourth century CE. That dates the script family, not this particular mark.

Vedic singers used numeral-shaped signs above syllables to guide pitch. A Grantha Sāma Veda Saṃhitā printed in 1985 identifies number 5 with mandra in the Gana, or sung section. A Grantha Sāmaveda manuscript catalogued with an 1831 date also shows numbered singing notation.

Why does 𑍫 look blank on its own?

It needs a Grantha syllable to attach to.

𑍫 is a nonspacing combining mark. With a Grantha syllable, a supporting font places it above its base; by itself, it may appear blank, detached, or as a missing-glyph box.

Some Sāmaveda marks sit side by side above the same syllable. In 𑌅𑍫, Grantha letter a gives the mark a base; if the mark appears misplaced, the font or text-shaping support may be at fault.

In Grantha chant notation, it signals sung pitch; in an ordinary number, it would be the wrong five.

Do not read 𑍫 as five counted objects; it marks pitch on a sung syllable.

1

Will 𑍫 render in every font?

No. It needs a font and shaping system that support Grantha combining marks; without them, it can appear blank or misplaced.
