sunuwar digit five

Sunuwar digit five

40/44

The Sunuwar five, 𑯵, marks the value five in this script’s decimal system. Like 5, its contribution depends on its place in a number. Krishna Bahadur Jentich developed the script for Sunuwar in 1942, with all ten digits in its original repertoire; earlier Unicode proposals called it Jenticha. A Latin-mapped legacy font can make a five look right without storing this Unicode character.

What 𑯵 means

Its place decides whether it contributes five, fifty, or five hundred.

Sunuwar’s ten digits cover decimal values zero through nine. In ordinary place-value notation, 𑯵 contributes five units in the ones place, five tens in the tens place, and so on.

Krishna Bahadur Jentich developed the script in 1942 to write Sunuwar, and the original set already included the ten digits. Earlier Unicode proposals called the script Jenticha, after its creator; the 2021 Unicode proposal records later community additions to the letters and marks.

Why does 𑯵 look different?

Fonts supply the outline; the encoded digit keeps its value.

A 2023 comparison of Unicode-proposal and community-developed Sunuwar fonts documents differences among some character designs. The active font determines the visible outline, while 𑯵 still denotes five.

The 2021 Unicode proposal documents older Sunuwar font workflows that mapped the script to Latin-key positions. A glyph that looks like five could therefore be a Latin character in the text rather than 𑯵.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𑯵 show as a box?

The font used to display the text may not include Sunuwar characters. A font with Sunuwar support can show the digit; the missing outline does not change its value.
