What ᨍ means
By itself, it represents the syllable ja.
Lontara consonants carry the vowel a; a vowel sign replaces it when a word needs a different vowel. In English, ja sounds like the j in “judge” plus a as in “father.”
Where did Lontara develop?
Lontara developed in South Sulawesi.
It descends from ancient Indian Brahmi writing and is attested by the fourteenth century. It may be historically related to Javanese script, though that link is uncertain.
Traditional records include genealogies, royal histories, diaries, laws, calendars, treaties, and epics. It was also used for Bima, at least formerly.

Questions people ask
1Why does ᨍ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
