buginese pallawa

Buginese Pallawa

Pallawa ᨞ marks pauses between phrase groups in Lontara, the traditional Bugis script; in Latin-script writing it works like a comma or period. Bugis writing took shape in South Sulawesi around the 14th century, with genealogies among early texts. Lontara belongs to the Brahmic family of scripts rooted in ancient India, with a possible link to Javanese writing; in Makassarese, another Sulawesi language, its equivalent mark is called passimbang.

What ᨞ means

It marks a spoken-rhythm boundary between phrases or sentences.

Traditional Bugis manuscripts can run words together, so pallawa separates larger phrase units. Some Latin transcriptions omit the mark, making that original pause harder to see.

Why does ᨞ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
