Text symbol

What ꮩ means

It writes the Cherokee syllable labeled “do.” The label names a syllable in Cherokee’s writing system, where one character represents a syllable. It belongs in Cherokee words; on its own, it does not translate a whole word.

Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary to write Cherokee speech. The writing system emerged in the early nineteenth century. A 2011 study interpreted inscriptions at Red Bird River Shelter as experimental syllabary work. In 1828, the Cherokee Phoenix used the syllabary in newspaper pages printed in both Cherokee and English.

Why does ꮩ look like a lowercase letter?

It is a lowercase form of an older Cherokee character. Cherokee print traditionally used cap-height forms without a lowercase set. Unicode 8.0 added lowercase forms for modern casing: ꮩ pairs with Ꮩ and represents the same syllable, not a different pronunciation.

The written forms changed across handwriting, print and digital text. Samuel Worcester and collaborators finalized printable Cherokee type in 1827. The Cherokee language is Iroquoian, and Sequoyah developed a syllabary for it; the script’s letters represent syllables rather than individual consonants and vowels.

How do I type ꮩ?

Use a Cherokee keyboard layout that supports the syllabary. A phonetic layout converts a transliteration into Cherokee characters; a one-key layout assigns a key to each character. As of August 13, 2026, Cherokee Nation lists input routes for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and Google Input Tools.

Typing and display are separate: a keyboard can enter ꮩ even if the font shows a box. The older Cherokee set has broader font support, so Ꮩ may display where ꮩ does not.

Why is ꮩ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
