What ꮘ means
It represents the Cherokee syllable “qui”; by itself, it is not a word.
Sequoyah developed the Cherokee syllabary between 1815 and 1821, creating signs for spoken Cherokee syllables. The Cherokee Nation adopted it in 1825. Missionary publishing and Cherokee political writing brought it into religious, civic, and newspaper use, including the Cherokee Phoenix in 1828.
Why is ꮘ lowercase?
Lowercase lets Cherokee sit more naturally beside Latin text.
Cherokee print historically used one cap-height style. Later typography introduced lowercase forms for mixed Cherokee–Latin text; the case changes the presentation, not the syllable. The syllabary also influenced Canadian Aboriginal syllabics and the Osage alphabet, though neither is another form of ꮘ.
What does it mean when someone sends ꮘ?
It is one Cherokee syllable, not a fixed reaction.
Alone, ꮘ is one piece of Cherokee writing. In a Cherokee message, the surrounding word gives it context; in an otherwise English message, its intended use is unclear.
Language-specific and neutral; it signals Cherokee writing.
