What ㉷ means
It encloses 차 and marks item ten in a Korean list sequence.
The inner 차 is pronounced roughly “cha,” with a noticeable puff of breath at the start. The circle makes it a compact label; its list value comes from its place in the sequence.
Why does ㉷ appear in Korean lists?
It belongs to Korean document typography for compact labels.
Hancom’s character-set guide dates the relevant Korean standard to 1987 and notes a 1997 revision. Unicode’s account of enclosed symbols lists KS X 1001:1998 among the source standards.
As of 2026, the W3C’s predefined circled-korean-syllable counter style places ㉷ tenth in the set. A counter style is a rule for formatting numbered list items.
How do I type ㉷?
Select the enclosed Hangul character from a Unicode table.
Typing the Korean consonant ㅊ and vowel ㅏ produces ordinary 차; it does not add a circle. In Hancom HWP, as of 2026, enter 3277 and press Alt+Shift+F10. Other editors use their own Unicode or character-table method.
Fonts vary in their support and design for enclosed Hangul. A missing glyph may appear as a box, while a fallback font can change the circle or inner letters.
Formal, compact, and document-like; as a list label, it marks position rather than tone.
Its place in the sequence supplies the number; 차 by itself does not mean tenth.
