combining double vertical stroke overlay

Combining Double Vertical Stroke Overlay

Place ⃦ immediately after the character it is meant to mark; alone, it has no base to attach to. Unicode lists it as a “Z notation finite function diacritic,” but that label is disputed: Z uses complete double-stroke arrows. When it appears by itself, fonts may show a dotted circle or missing-glyph box.

What ⃦ means

Place it directly after the character it modifies.

As a combining mark, ⃦ follows its base without a space. In JSON or JavaScript, write \u20E6 after the base's escape; in HTML, write ⃦ immediately after the base character.

By itself, it has no character to mark and is not a complete operator.

what does ⃦ mean in z notation?

Unicode gives it a Z label, but that use is disputed.

Z is a mathematical notation for describing a system's states and operations, especially in computing. Jean-Raymond Abrial's 1974 paper “Data Semantics” is treated as a precursor; Z itself took shape in the late 1970s and developed at Oxford with industrial partners including IBM and Inmos, a semiconductor company, through the 1980s.

Unicode's NamesList calls ⃦ the “Z notation finite function diacritic”; the list still carries that label as of 2026. A 2019 Unicode review comment challenged it: the Z finite-function arrow ⇻ already includes its double strokes. Treat the label as a catalogue note, not a recipe for building a Z arrow.

why does ⃦ look broken?

An isolated combining mark has nowhere to attach.

Without a base, shaping software may show it over a dotted circle or as a missing-glyph box. Font fallback can also put the stroke in the wrong place.

Check the base-plus-mark sequence in the font and app that will display it. A displaced or missing overlay points to font or shaping support.

Technical notation; by itself, this mark reads as an incomplete character sequence.

Do not build a Z operator by appending ⃦; the finite-function arrow already includes its strokes.

Why does ⃦ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
