What ᪰ means
In Teuthonista, ᪰ marks an over-long vowel.
Teuthonista transcribes regional German: a bar-shaped macron marks long, a roof-shaped circumflex half-long vowels, and ᪰ over-long ones. The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a sound-symbol system, rarely uses it for a falling-rising-falling tone.
How did ᪰ enter Teuthonista?
It developed through earlier transcription systems.
Lepsius’s alphabet (1855), Ascoli’s related system for languages descended from Latin (1873), and Philipp Lenz’s scheme (by 1900) preceded Teuthonista. Teuchert presented its journal form in 1924–1925; Hotzenköcherle’s 1962 Swiss German dialect atlas includes an exact form. It marked vowel length in dialect records.
