Combining Equals Sign Below

72/112

Place after the letter it modifies. In extIPA, an extension to the International Phonetic Alphabet, it marks alveolar articulation; after a lip-made consonant, it can mark extra tongue contact at the ridge behind the upper teeth. Despite its name, it is not the mathematical equals sign.

What ͇ means

Place it immediately after the base letter.

In an extIPA transcription, put this IPA diacritic after the letter for the sound. In JSON, JavaScript, or Java, write \u0347 after the base character; in HTML, write ͇ after it.

A combining mark has no spacing position of its own. Without a base, some fonts show a dotted circle to mark where it would attach; the circle is a display aid, not part of . Fonts and shaping software control its size and placement. A standards comment corrected its reference width in 2007 relative to the combining minus sign, another mark placed below a character.

What does mean in phonetic writing?

The base letter and notation system set its reading.

A coronal consonant is made with the tongue tip or blade. In extIPA, after one specifies an alveolar place: the ridge just behind the upper teeth. After a consonant made with the lips, it can mark alveolarization: extra tongue contact at that ridge.

A subgroup of the International Phonetic Association was formed at its 1989 Kiel Convention to improve transcription of disordered speech. Its report appeared as the extIPA set in 1990, giving clinicians notation for fine articulatory detail.

Specialist phonetic notation; its reading depends on the base letter and transcription system.

Despite its name, is not ; use ordinary for equality.

Why does show a dotted circle?
