What ͕ means
Put the base letter first. In t͕, the combining mark called the right arrowhead below modifies the t immediately before it. Its visible position depends on the base and font; a descender may push it toward the right.
What does this mark mean in the UPA?
It marks articulation farther forward in the mouth. In the Uralic Phonetic Alphabet (UPA), it can mark a t or k made farther forward than usual, or a vowel articulated toward the front. The UPA tradition is documented from 1901, with linguist E. N. Setälä’s proposal and contemporary examples; it was designed for precise descriptions of Uralic languages.
Researchers and language documenters did not always apply later UPA conventions identically, so read the mark with the transcription key for the source you are using.
Specialist phonetic notation used in Uralic language description; its sound value depends on the transcription system.
The arrowhead marks articulation, not travel direction.
