᪴

combining triple dot

Combining triple dot

᪴ is a specialist combining mark used in Teuthonista, a system for writing dialect speech phonetically in Germanic and Romance languages, and in Böhmer–Ascoli notation; its reading depends on the base letter and transcription convention. A font without support can leave the dots detached.

What ᪴ means

It marks a dialect letter within specialist phonetic transcription. Teuthonista writes dialect speech by sound, including dialects of Germanic and Romance languages such as German and Italian. The mark also appears in Böhmer–Ascoli notation. Read it with the base letter and transcription convention: those give the mark its value.

The wider Teuthonista and Böhmer–Ascoli traditions grew from dialect transcription systems in the 19th century. The specialist journal Teuthonista gave the system its name in 1924–25. A dialect atlas of Lower Bavaria also uses the mark.

Specialist phonetic notation for dialect transcription.

A font without support may detach the dots or show a missing-glyph box.

Why does ᪴ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
