What ᪵ means
Put ᪵ immediately after the character it modifies.
It is a nonspacing mark: in p᪵, it attaches to p. A space or missing base leaves a detached sequence, not a dependable transcription.
Use a Unicode-aware editor’s character-entry feature to insert it. The font must position it below its base; limited support can show it separately or as a missing-glyph box, so inspect it in the target document.
What does ᪵ mean in Teuthonista?
It marks a further weakening, called a lenis degree.
A lenis consonant is articulated with less force than its fortis counterpart. In Teuthonista, ᪵ marks a stronger degree of that weakening; it is one modifier below a base character, not two ordinary x letters.
The notation family grew through several systems for writing down speech sounds, rather than from one inventor. Lepsius’s General Linguistic Alphabet appeared in 1855, and Ascoli developed a related system in 1873. Philipp Lenz’s German system was in place by 1900; in 1924–1925, Hermann Teuchert adapted it for Teuthonista, a journal for dialect research. These systems let researchers record local pronunciation more closely than ordinary spelling.
Why does this mark need a transcription legend?
Its reading depends on the project’s transcription legend.
Teuthonista was adapted across language settings for dialect atlases—projects that map local speech. Swiss German atlas makers adopted it from colleagues studying Romance languages, descended from Latin, in the 1930s.
From the 1970s, atlas projects in Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Czech Republic followed the Swiss model and expanded their set of marks. Different marks could represent one pronunciation, so use the project’s legend.
A specialist mark in detailed dialect transcription.
Alone, it is incomplete; check its base and the transcription legend before reading it.

1The single X-below mark is the lighter Teuthonista form; ᪵ marks the doubled, stronger degree.
Questions people ask
1Why does ᪵ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Combining Diacritical Marks Extended block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
