What ⩭ means
Congruence means that two objects match in a defined sense. In geometry, congruent figures have the same shape and size: one can fit exactly over the other after moving, turning or flipping it. This explains the idea behind the base sign .
The dotted sign ⩭ marks a modified congruence relation, meaning a particular way of matching the objects on either side. Its name does not assign the dot a universal mathematical rule. When reading a proof or definition, keep the dot and check the author's explanation of the relation before using it in a calculation.

Questions people ask
1Why does ⩭ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Supplemental Mathematical Operators block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
