What ⌲ means
The diameter changes by 1 for every 20 along the axis. Taper is the difference between the large and small diameters divided by the length between them. A section 100 mm long that narrows from 30 mm to 25 mm has a taper of 5:100, written ⌲ 1:20.
The symbol sits on a leader line pointing at the cone, just before the ratio, and is drawn so its point aims the way the cone narrows. It describes the whole cone, so you don't need to measure both ends to know how steep it is.
Why do tapers matter in machining?
A cone centres itself and grips by friction. Push a tapered shank into a matching tapered socket and it lines up on the axis and locks tight, yet knocks out again with a tap. That is why drill chucks, lathe centres, Morse-taper tool shanks and tapered pins rely on it.
Don't mix ⌲ up with , the slope sign for flat wedge-shaped surfaces. Slope counts the height change on one side; taper counts the change in the full diameter, so it is twice the change on each side.

2Questions people ask
2Can a taper ratio be turned into an angle?
Yes. The half-angle is the arctangent of half the taper: 1:20 gives about 1.43, so the full cone angle is about 2.86.
Is ⌲ an emoji?
No. It is a plain text symbol, so it appears in your font's style and some fonts may not include it.
