What ⌱ means
It identifies the feature where one measured dimension begins. In geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), ⌱ takes the place of one arrowhead on the dimension line to mark that feature.
Is ⌱ the same as a datum symbol?
No. It marks one dimension's start; a datum sets a reference. A datum is a feature or reference used to control a part's geometry. ⌱ identifies the starting feature for one dimension; it does not establish the reference for broader geometric control.
As Unicode text, ⌱ is drawn by the reader's font, so its outline can differ from the mark used in a technical drawing.
This is specialist drafting notation, used in GD&T and technical drawings.
Do not use ⌱ as a substitute for a datum reference.
Questions people ask
1Why does ⌱ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

Codes and encoding1 code points
A visible symbol can contain several code points. JS .length counts UTF-16 units; UTF-8 counts bytes.
