What Ⳇ means
It represents “sh,” as in English ship. Old Coptic combined Greek letters with Demotic signs, an Egyptian script, to write sounds Greek letters did not represent.
The Schmidt Papyrus, one of the oldest surviving Old Coptic texts, preserves Ⳇ in a religious petition to Osiris around 100 CE. The sign’s graphic source remains uncertain. Standard Coptic later uses ϣ for the same sound.
