What ⲻ means
ⲻ is the Dialect-P form of Coptic Ni.
Dialect P is a Coptic variety used to write Egyptian, also called Proto-Theban. ⲻ had its own alphabet letter; ordinary ⲛ wrote consonant n, not a syllable alone. ⲻ derives from a Demotic sign in ancient Egyptian writing, not Greek Nu. The earliest surviving witness to Dialect P is Bodmer VI, a parchment Proverbs codex (handwritten book) from the late third century.
Specialist and historical: it identifies a distinct Dialect-P spelling choice.
Do not substitute ⲛ for ⲻ when preserving Dialect-P spelling.

1Why does ⲻ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
