What ⳕ means
It writes the Egyptian consonant ḥ, a deep, rough h-like sound. The letter appears in the Munich Papyrus, usually dated to the second century CE.
The “hat” in its scholarly name comes from Egyptian ḥꜣt, “wick”; it is not a picture of headwear.
Why add this sign to Coptic writing?
Old Coptic used extra signs for Egyptian sounds Greek letters could not write. Old Coptic is an early alphabetic way of writing Egyptian, based mainly on Greek letters and supplemented with signs borrowed from Demotic, a cursive Egyptian script. Its scripts were developed by the first century CE at the latest.
In later standard Coptic, ⳕ and this historical sound do not appear. Some Old Coptic texts use the letter for dialectal pronunciation or older spellings.
